Prudence Is Power

Preconception care is a set of interventions designed to improve a person’s health before pregnancy, ensuring the best possible outcomes for both parent and child.
“Babe, I think we should start trying for a baby”
What do you think usually follows that statement?
Do couples ever pause and ask, “Are we healthy enough to proceed?” or “Should we first see an OBGYN?”
Here’s the truth:
Studies show that about 50% of pregnancies are unplanned. That’s an alarmingly high number especially considering how much information we now have about contraception.
And among the other 50% who actually plan their pregnancies, only a handful attend preconception care.
Why This Matters to Me:
One of the reasons I started this platform was after reading an article about strategies to prevent preterm birth through preconception care.
The way that article was written touched my heart,it made me realize how much better our outcomes could be if this information reached every woman in the community.
My Message Today Is Simple
If you are in your reproductive years, pregnancy may not be a far-fetched idea.
It is recommended that you get checked at least 6 months before you start trying.
Even if you’re not yet certain about your plans, preparing in advance can make a meaningful difference.
Here’s how you can start:
-Basic health checks: screening or optimising existing medical conditions and checking if current medications are safe for pregnancy.
-Maintain fitness and healthy eating to achieve an optimal weight.
-Minimize or avoid alcohol and smoking.
-Treat STIs promptly and always complete your antibiotics.
-Take vitamins, especially folic acid and iron. I recommend a good multivitamin that contains both.
-genetic screening
-mental health screening
